Titanic Fact 4: William Murdoch

First Officer William Murdoch was one of the main officers aboard Titanic. He launched around 10 of the ships lifeboats. His boats contained 75 percent of Titanic survivors. He was last seen attempting to launch Lifeboat A. Many say that they saw a wave come up and knock him into the ocean. Others say they saw him after the ship had sunk. Then, there was some talk that someone on board titanic committed suicide towards the end. But it has never been confirmed to be Murdoch. In the 1997 film, Titanic, Murdoch commits suicide after accidentally shooting the fictional character, Tommy. Murdoch's 80 year old nephew saw the film and was appalled at the depiction of his uncle. The Vice-President of 20th Century Fox, visited the nephew to give him a personal apology. Fox then donated money to a memorial fund for William Murdoch.

  1. I don't see the need to apologize. I understand why they would but don't think it was necessary. It's a fictional movie based on historical fact but not tied to it. They don't know exactly how Murdoch died and this certainly adds to the drama of the movie.
